The Eagle Tavern Site (Washington's Trenton Headquarters)

About This Place

The site of the Eagle Tavern, where Washington reportedly established his temporary headquarters after the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776. The original tavern no longer stands, but the location is marked in Trenton's downtown area.

Revolutionary Significance

After the Battle of Trenton, Washington used several buildings in the town as temporary headquarters while consolidating his victory and deciding on next steps. Taverns served as command posts throughout the Revolution because they offered large rooms for meetings, stabling for horses, and food and drink for officers. The Eagle Tavern was one of Trenton's principal inns during the colonial period.
