About This Place
Mill Hill Park sits on elevated ground south of the Assunpink Creek in Trenton and was the site where Washington positioned his army during the Second Battle of Trenton on January 2, 1777. The park offers a vantage point over the creek crossing and the battlefield landscape.
Revolutionary Significance
On January 2, 1777, Washington arranged his forces along the high ground south of the Assunpink Creek, with the creek serving as a natural defensive barrier. From Mill Hill, the Americans could observe and fire upon any British attempt to cross the creek. After successfully defending the position against Cornwallis's attacks, Washington used the darkness to slip his army east and march to Princeton, leaving campfires burning to deceive the British. The park today preserves a portion of this defensive terrain.
