St. Michael's Episcopal Church

About This Place

St. Michael's Episcopal Church, founded in 1703, is one of Trenton's oldest religious institutions. During the Revolution, the Anglican congregation included both patriots and Loyalists, reflecting the divided loyalties that characterized many communities in New Jersey.

Revolutionary Significance

The original St. Michael's Church building stood on Warren Street during the Revolution and was in the path of the fighting on December 26, 1776. The church cemetery contains graves from the colonial and revolutionary periods. The Anglican/Episcopal congregation's divided loyalties during the Revolution mirrored the broader divisions in New Jersey society, where the war was often experienced as a civil conflict between neighbors.
