Hessian Prisoners Housed at Carlisle

Carlisle, PA· year date

The Story

After the American victories at Trenton and Princeton, captured Hessian soldiers were marched to Carlisle and held as prisoners of war. The town's distance from the front lines made it suitable for housing prisoners, though the influx strained local resources.

Some Hessian prisoners eventually settled in the Cumberland Valley after the war, drawn by the German-speaking community already established there. The presence of prisoners in Carlisle was a visible reminder that the war had international dimensions — these were German soldiers hired by the British crown, far from home and uncertain of their fate.
