Halifax Resolves: First Official Call for Independence

North Carolina was the first colony whose official government body — not a pamphleteer or a mob — called explicitly for independence. The Halifax Resolves gave North Carolina's delegation to the Continental Congress the authority to vote for separation from Britain.
