The Road Itself Fought Back

The British had been told the colonials wouldn't stand and fight. After Lexington Green and Concord's North Bridge, the evidence was mixed. But on the road back to Boston — the twelve miles from Concord through Lincoln and Lexington — the evidence became conclusive. Every stone wall was a fighting position. Every bend in the road was an ambush. The Lincoln section of the road had all of these things in abundance, and the militiamen from Lincoln and the surrounding towns knew every angle. By the time the column reached Lexington, it had taken more than two hundred casualties. The road itself had fought back.
