# Machias, Maine *[needs_review — scaffold only]* Two months after Lexington, the remote Maine lumber town of Machias scored the Revolution's first naval victory. On June 12, 1775, local patriots led by Jeremiah O'Brien rowed out in lumber sloops and captured the armed British schooner Margaretta after her commander was killed resisting capture. The engagement predates the establishment of the Continental Navy. Maine's official state holiday of Margaretta Day commemorates the action.
