Colonel Rall Headquarters Site (Stacy Potts House)

Historic House

The Stacy Potts House on King Street (now Warren Street) served as Colonel Johann Rall's headquarters during the Hessian occupation of Trenton in December 1776. Rall was sleeping in this house when the American attack began on the morning of December 26.

What Happened Here

Colonel Rall commandeered the Stacy Potts House as his personal quarters during the occupation. According to multiple accounts, Rall was asleep in the house on the morning of December 26 when the sound of musket fire alerted him to the attack. He emerged to organize his troops but was unable to establish a coherent defensive position before being mortally wounded. The house was later demolished, but the site is historically significant as the location where the Hessian commander was caught off guard.
