Hannah Davis and the Morning He Left

Hannah Davis watched her husband Isaac leave before dawn on April 19, 1775. She was 31 years old. They had four children. Isaac was a gunsmith — he had spent months fitting out his company with the best equipment in the county. He kissed Hannah and the children and walked out the door. The tradition says she begged him not to go. He is said to have told her he was not a man who was afraid. By eight o'clock that morning he was dead at the North Bridge in Concord, the first commissioned officer killed in the American Revolution. Hannah Davis raised her four children alone, remarried once, and outlived her second husband too. She is buried in the South Acton cemetery.
