Fortified island in Boston Harbor with military history dating to 1634. During the Revolution, the British held the position before evacuating.

What Happened Here

The island has been fortified since the earliest colonial days. The current granite fort (1851) replaced earlier structures. Washington's forces took control after the British evacuation.
