Monument

Plaque marking the location of the great elm tree where colonists hanged effigies of British officials and gathered to protest. The original tree was cut down by Loyalists in 1775.

What Happened Here

The Liberty Tree became a symbol of colonial resistance throughout the colonies. British soldiers hated it so intensely that they cut it down for firewood.
