Roanoke River at Halifax
Landmark
The Roanoke River flows past Halifax, connecting the Piedmont backcountry to the Albemarle Sound. The river was Halifax's commercial artery — tobacco and naval stores moved downstream to port towns; manufactured goods moved up. The geography that made Halifax a commercial center also made it a natural gathering place for the provincial political community that assembled there in April 1776.
