They Came Over the Mountains

Modern Voiceverified

Every year in September and October, people walk the Overmountain Victory Trail — over Yellow Mountain Gap, down through the Toe River valley, across the Piedmont to Kings Mountain. It takes about two weeks on foot.

Yellow Mountain Gap is nearly 4,700 feet. In late September it's cold. The Overmountain Men crossed that gap with horses, cattle, and supplies — the logistics of a small army — moving fast because they didn't know if Ferguson would stand and fight or flee before they could reach him.

They weren't professional soldiers. Nobody ordered them to go. They went because a British officer had threatened their homes and families, and waiting had stopped being an option.

They fought for one day and went home. Most never fought another battle. But those sixty-five minutes on a narrow ridge in South Carolina caused Cornwallis to pull back, shifted the Southern Campaign's trajectory, and is part of why there's a country here at all. That's a lot of weight for one afternoon's work.
