The Story
Marblehead ship owners fitted out privateers throughout the war, though on a smaller scale than Salem. The town's experienced seamen were in demand for both naval and privateering service, creating competition for manpower between Glover's regiment and the privateering fleet.
Marblehead privateers captured British merchant vessels along the New England coast, disrupting supply lines and generating revenue for the town and the war effort. The economic impact of privateering helped offset, but did not eliminate, the devastating losses the fishing fleet suffered during the war.
