Monmouth Battlefield State Park
Battlefield
Monmouth Battlefield State Park preserves the site of the Battle of Monmouth, fought on June 28, 1778, across approximately 1,800 acres of fields, orchards, hedgerows, and wetlands in Manalapan Township, New Jersey. The park encompasses the primary engagement areas where Washington reformed the Continental Army line after Lee's retreat and where sustained fighting continued until nightfall.
What Happened Here
The battlefield landscape retains much of its 18th-century character. The open agricultural fields that witnessed the heaviest fighting — the area around the Hedgerow, the Parsonage, and the West Morass — remain largely unobstructed. The park preserves the terrain features that shaped the battle: the ravines and marshy ground that channeled troop movements, the ridgelines that provided artillery positions, and the hedgerows that served as defensive lines. The Visitor Center houses exhibits on the battle, the Monmouth campaign, and the significance of Valley Forge training. Annual reenactments and interpretive programs are held on the anniversary of the battle.
