National Day of Thanksgiving Proclaimed

York, PA· month date

The Story

Congress proclaimed the first national day of thanksgiving while meeting in York, designating December 18, 1777, as a day for Americans to give thanks for the victory at Saratoga and other blessings. The proclamation was both a genuine expression of gratitude and a morale-building exercise at a time when the war's outcome remained deeply uncertain.

The proclamation reflected Congress's understanding that maintaining public support required more than military orders. Setting aside a day for communal gratitude helped reinforce the sense of national purpose and provided a moment of unity during a winter of military setbacks and political anxiety.
